The Spanish and Mexican land grants of Zapata County are highlighted on this 1879 map. The long, narrow surveys emanating from the Rio Grande, called porciones, date back to grants made under the Crown of Spain in 1767. The northwest area of the county is dominated by the massive Jose Vasquez Borrego survey, which covers an incredible 276,350 acres in Zapata and Webb counties.
