Turtle Creek is the name of a small tributary of the Trinity River in Dallas. The creek is fed by springs and has never run dry. This painting was a gift by artist Reveau Bassett as payment for his music lessons in the 1920s. His teacher proudly displayed the painting above her mantel until she passed it on to her son and his wife. The family continued to enjoy the painting showing the area before development for decades before it came to the Capitol Collection.
