Palo Duro Canyon is the second largest canyon in the country and lies in the heart of the Texas Panhandle. The painting was submitted by the artist Franz Strahalm, who specialized in Texas landscapes, at the prestigious 1926 Sesquicentennial International Exposition in Philadelphia. The artist was born in Vienna, Austria, and studied at the Art School of Hamburg. Strahalm eventually moved to Dallas and opened the School in Fine Painting, a private art studio.
