Butte and Mesa depicts two prominent features in the West Texas landscape. Buttes and mesas are elevated areas of land with flat tops and steep sides that rise from the plains. The artist Frank Reaugh, although not born in Texas, settled in the state in 1876. After the 1890s, Reaugh worked increasingly in pastels. In his later life, he mourned the passing of the open range for the sake of progress.
