Lyndon Baines Johnson was born in Stonewall, Texas and trained as a teacher. He served as a U.S. Representative from 1937 to 1949 and as a U.S. Senator from 1949 to 1961 before he was elected Vice President. He became President on November 22, 1963 upon the death of President John F. Kennedy and served until 1969. David P. Wilson, a faculty member at Trinity University in San Antonio, was commissioned to paint this picture that hangs in the Texas Capitol Senate Chamber.
