Description
The San Jacinto Battle Flag hangs in the House Chamber. It was given to the Newport Rifles, a 52-man company of Kentucky volunteers led by Captain Sidney Sherman, who traveled to Texas to fight for independence from Mexico. Made of silk and adorned with a painting of Lady Liberty, this flag is thought to be the only Texas flag flown at the decisive battle. It was presented to the State of Texas in 1896 by Sherman descendants and conserved for display in 1933 and again in 1989.
